You're relaxing at home, when you realize it's starting to feel a little chilly in the house. The heat must not be working. Before you pick up the phone, take a few minutes to troubleshoot your system with this list.
1. Check the Thermostat
First of all, is the room temperature within a few degrees of the of the set temperature? If it is, then it's probably working. If not, there are a few things to check, depending on the type of thermostat you have. An old, round mercury thermostat may need the cover removed and any accumulated dust gently blown from the contacts. Newer digital thermostats, often have an ON/OFF switch and HEAT/COOL switch. Make sure they are in the ON and HEAT positions. Programmable thermostats may be set to come on and off at certain times, so make sure the clock is set to the correct time. Lastly, do the batteries need to be changed?
2. Check the Burner Emergency Switch
Not every system has one; but if you do, it is usually located about head-high at the top of the basement stairs and has a red switch plate cover. The switch should be in the ON position.
3. Check the Fuel Gauge
Look at the gauge on your oil or propane tank to make sure you have fuel.
4. Check the Service Switch
The Service Switch is usually located on the front or side of the boiler or furnace and looks like a light switch. Make sure it is in the ON position.
5. Check the Breaker
Go to your electrical panel and locate the breaker for the boiler or furnace (hopefully it's marked) and make sure it's not tripped.
After going through this list and making sure everything is how it should be, try re-starting the boiler or furnace. If the burner doesn't fire, DO NOT RESET IT MORE THAN ONCE. Call us at 508-237-1014.
My ac troubleshoots a week ago and i called an hvac contractor for help, the problem has been detected in the thermostat. They diagnosed the problem and took an hour to fix it. Now, the problem has not been seen in the ac unit and it's working great.
