Tankless Water Heaters Need Maintenance Too

A tankless water heater can provide your home with a steady supply of hot water on demand, while reducing your energy costs. In order to maximize these benefits, it's important to have your heater cleaned annually. This preventative maintenance will help to maximize both the lifespan and energy efficiency of the unit.

Most brands of tankless water heaters have an in-line filter located in the cold water inlet. This filter can become clogged over time and adversely impact the heater's performance. To avoid this, the filter should be removed, cleaned and reinstalled annually.

Inside the air intake of the heater, is usually an air filter. A dirty filter can reduce performance, so it too should be inspected and removed, cleaned and reinstalled if necessary.

When water is heated inside the tankless water heater, dissolved minerals can separate and be left behind to build up on the heat exchanger. This is referred to as Scale and the harder your water is, the quicker it can affect the water heater's efficiency and potentially shorten it's lifespan. Descaling is the process of removing the scale from the system by circulating white vinegar through the heat exchanger for 45-60 minutes. It's important, after, to flush with enough fresh water to completely remove the vinegar and scale from the unit.

Regular maintenance can keep your tankless hot water heater working quickly and efficiently year after year.
